William Penn Charter (PA) put on a clinic on how to run a 4x800. While they were even with Padua Academy (DE) at the first exchange, Penn Charter's Abby Downin began to open the gap on the field once she got the baton. Halfway through the second leg, she had built a lead of over 40 meters. At the second exchange, the lead grew to 60 meters as West Springfield (VA) and Padua Academy battled for second/third position. The gap continued to grow, as Penn Charter was 80 meters ahead of West Springfield (currently running second) going into the final exchange. When the bell was ringing, the gap between Penn Charter and West Springfield was 100 meters. Penn Charter continued to race the clock, crossing the finish line in what would be the only sub-9 minute time of the day. When Penn Charter crossed the finish line, West Springfield had just entered the final straightaway of the race.
