The field was fast and competitive from the start. Virginia, Texas A&M, Michigan, and Penn State were consistently near the front and keeping the pace honest. These four thinned out the field and formed the front pack by the start of the third leg. Michigan and Penn State broke away from the field just before the final exchange. It was at this point it was announced that the meet record - one of the oldest of the meet - was in jeopardy. The conference rivals battled throughout the final leg, with Michigan making the decisive move in the final curve to the front. Penn State did their best to respond but Michigan powered to the win, shattering the meet record that stood since 1985 but coming shy of the national record. This was Michigan's tenth event win. Penn State's time also bettered the old meet record.
