What was rumored to be a world record-breaking event was fizzled early in the first leg, as the entire field stayed together, led by NAU. NAU led the pack to the first handoff in 4:13. The pack picked up once Virginia took over the lead with 9 laps to go in the race, thinning out the field. NAU and Wisconsin challenged Virginia for the lead in the final lap of the leg, as Wisconsin got the lead off the final curve and had a 3 step gap over NAU at the second handoff. Virginia quickly regained the lead within 200m of the third leg, and soon a lead pack (Virginia, Wisconsin, NAU, and Oregon) was formed. Virginia and NAU broke away with 600m to go in the third leg, running side by side to the final handoff. They had a 25m lead over Oregon and Villanova (featuring the DMR anchors from the day before, where Oregon held off Villanova for the DMR win). In the final leg, Oregon and Villanova caught up with NAU and Virginia by 300m, forming a fast pack of four. Wisconsin returned to the front pack with 2 laps to go. Villanova moved to the front with 600m to go. Wisconsin made a move to the front just before the bell, attempting to squeeze past Villanova, resulting in some pushing between Villanova and Wisconsin. After the contact, Villanova surged ahead to get away from the field. Virginia made their move on the back stretch, followed by Oregon on the final curve. Oregon kept charging on the final straightaway to pass Villanova on the outside, but Villanova held them off, claiming the win by a step as Villanova won their 23rd wheel in this event.
