McElhinney and Hennessy run the 3rd and 4th fastest HS Girls Mile at the meet with their 4:39.89 and 4:40.01 respective times. McElhinney becommes the first 2x champion since Angel Piccirillo (Homer Center PA) in 2011. Defending champion Dylan McIlhinney (Hunter NY) was fine being the pack leader at the beginning of the race, keeping the field close until the end of the second lap when she slowly began to pull away. Abigail Hennessy (Westford MA) and MAddie McCabe (Notre Dame Manhattan) maintained contact with McIlhenney, and the three of them broke away from the field. McCabe dropped from the lead back halfway through the lap, while Hennessy stayed on McIlhenney’s shoulder. On the bell lap, Hennessy attempted a move on the final backstretch, but McIlhenney would not give up the lead. The two girls raced side-by-side on the final curve, but McIlhenney managed to get a step ahead of Hennessy, holding her off to defend her title with the number #3 time in meet history: 4:39.89 to 4:40.01. McIlhenney is the first two-time champion since Homer Center’s Angel Piccarillo (2010-2011).
